Cankton was a thriving community when it was founded in 1849. In fact, it was incorporated as a town in 1854. A historical marker stands in the center of town. The town’s namesake, Edward Douglas White, was the first governor of Louisiana. In 1861, four men from Cankton were killed in the Civil War. One of them was a Confederate naval officer named Alphonse Barber.
